	Veneer Stones are stones that are used to face vertical surfaces such as fireplaces and home fronts.  Originally these stones were only available in a 4 to 6 inch thickness which required the stone to be set onto a "footing ledge" because of the heavy weight of the stone. New England Fieldstone Cultured Veneer

Using footings in veneer applications is only necessary when using 4-6" natural veneer stones (photo above). Cultured Venner (pictured left) is installed without the need for a "footing ledge", making in an easier application for the average homeowner to install.
